What is so special about soy wax?  The soy wax used by Soy

why-soywax.jpgCandles by Phebes is a hydrogenated form of pure soybean oil.  Soy wax was developed in the early 90s as an alternative to paraffin wax - widely used by traditional candle makers and a by-product of petroleum production.

When you buy a Soy Candles by Phebes candle, you can be sure that the wax is made from soybeans grown in America; the best quality and nothing but the wax.  We use no presertatives, dyes or chemicals of any kind.

One of my candles burn with some little black disks at the top of the wick, what is that?  The little black disks or balls that sometimes develop at the top of a wick, after the candle has burned several hours, is called 'mushrooming'.  It's typical of highly scented candles and is a sign that your candle has as much scent oil in it as is possible.

A small amount of mushrooming should be of no concern but Soy Candles by Phebes recommends that all wicks be trimmed back to 1/4 inch or less before lighting, in order to minimize mushrooming.

I would like to buy your candles locally.  Please feel free to recommend to your local gift store or spa.  Soy Candles by Phebes has a great wholesale program.  Please have them email us for details.

One of my Soy Candles by Phebes that I bought awhile back has some white powder on it, what is that?  A thin layer of white powdery looking wax on the top of a candle that you've had around for awhile is a natrual characteristic of soy.  It's the result of the top of the candle interacting with the oxygen in the atmosphere.  It's one way to tell that your candle is 100% soy instead of a soy/paraffin blend that some lower cost retailers try to pass off as 100% pure soy.  There is nothing wrong with the candle; it will burn exactly like any other Soy Candles by Phebes and the power will disappear during the first burning of the candle with no ill effects.

Can I could use soy wax as a moisturizer? Soy wax is great as a moisturizer.  It's hypoallergenic and natural and really softens dry skin.  Be sure to get an unscented candle for your skin though; some people might have skin reaction to some scent oils so Soy Candles by Phebes does not recomment using the scented products in the same manner unless you've tested it out on a small patch of skin first.

Should I use a plug in or a candle powered tart warmer? Soy Candles by Phebes recommends an electric tart warmer.  The heat is much more reliable and even.  The tart warmer featured at Soy Candles by Phebes is the perfect size for our products.  It can be used to mix and match wickless tart scents or even to warm a traditional candle if you remove the ceramic bowl.

When should I discard my melted tart wax? Use Soy Candles by Phebes wickless tarts until you can no longer smell the scent.  Our tarts come in a segmented container; making it simple for you to mix and match half ounce blocks of your favorite scents together.

The performance life of a single half ounce tart of wax is generally either to ten hours of full performance.  You get six blocks of highly scented soy wax per tart, at a concentration higher than that of our candles due to the fact that it's wickless, making Soy Candles by Phebes wickless tarts a great value and a great gift set.

By the way.  The best way to discard your tart wax is to turn the unit off and let it harden; then use a spoon or butter knife to cut the hardened wax out of the ceramic bowl.  The wax is soft even when it's solid so this is not a difficult process.

What does triple scented mean?  The term 'triple scented' is a reference to the amount of scent oil 'by volume' in a candle.  The inferior big box stores with their 24 ounce paraffin candles for US$4.99 generally use 2% low quality scent oil by volume.

The first generation of soy wax, back in the early 90s, could hold 6% oil by volume, so the marketing term 'triple scented' was born.  Soy wax technology has advanced since the 90s and the high quality American grown soy wax used by Soy Candles by Phebes can hold 11-12% oil by volumn now!

That is why you don't see the term 'triple scented' at Soy Candles by Phebes.  We use not just triple, but five to six times the amount of oil that the big box stores use.  Also, our essential oils and scent oils are the best that can be had.  The result is a Soy Candles by Phebes that is elegant, highly fragranced, long lasting, top of the line quality candle - for not much more than the big box stores.

How long should I burn the candle the first time I light it?  Soy Candles by Phebes should acquire a full "melt pool" on the first burn.   Full melt pool is achieved when all wax is melted from one side of the candle to the other.  If it is extinguished prior to full melt pool, the candle will under-perform on subsequent burnings, creating a "tunneling effect" down into the body of the candle.

How long will my candle last?  The amount of time your Soy Candle by Phebes will last depends on how long you burn the candle each time you light it.  If you follow instructions and burn the candle for no more than 2-3 hours each time you light it, your Soy Candles by Phebes 8.5 ounce candle will last about 45 hours and the 4 ounce travel tin will last about 25 hours.

What should I do with the candle glass after I burn the candle?  The heavy glass used by Soy Candles by Phebes is great for a number of uses around the house.  The glass is great for collections of small items in the shop or bathroom.

They can be used as a toothbrush holder or glass for your mouth wash.  The glass is even great as a juce glass at the table.  Just remember to run the glass through a disinfecting cycle of your dishwasher first.

How long will it take to receive my order?  Soy Candles by Phebes ships on Mondays and Thursdays. This allows for delivery to most address within the United States - using USPS 2-3 day express shipping - within the week so that your order won't be sitting in a truck during the heat of summer.

A typical order turnaround is 5-7 business days with delivery to you taking another 1-3 days.   We use USPS (United States Postal Service) as our primary shipper, UPS and FedEx available upon request.
